Small changes to your setup can make your teaching or presenting feel much more professional. Here are five tips that don’t require expensive gear.
1. Light your face from the front
A window or a small lamp in front of you (not behind) evens out your face and reduces shadows. Avoid sitting with a bright window at your back—you’ll look like a silhouette.
2. Put the camera at eye level
Laptop on a stand or books so the webcam is at eye height. You’ll look more natural and make better eye contact with the camera.
3. Reduce background noise
Close windows, mute notifications, and if possible use a quiet room. Even a basic headset or USB microphone improves sound a lot compared to the built-in laptop mic.
4. Choose a simple background
A tidy wall, a bookshelf, or a neutral virtual background works best. Avoid busy or distracting motion behind you.
5. Test before you go live
Do a short test call or recording to check how you look and sound. Fix lighting or mic position before the real session so you can focus on content, not tech.
Once these become habit, you can spend your energy on what you’re teaching—and your audience will notice the difference.
